I just picked up a book yesterday…a 170 page book (without pictures)…and i finished it this morning.
Yep, finished. Now, i am not saying this to impress you (although, i think you might be impressed with my reading abilities), i am saying this because it was so good! The book is, “Jim and Casper go to Church,” subtitle… “A believer, an atheist, an unlikely friendship…Frank conversation about faith, churches, and well-meaning Christians.”
i think every Christian, church-goer, and especially every church leader should have to read this book. It is very insightful. How many of us “church people” actually ever think about how we look to others (aka all the “lost” heathen out there)? Do we ever think about the things we say or the things our churches do?
This book opens up a lot of thoughts and discussions. How would an outsider feel in your church? What would their first impression be of what we do?
The sad thing is…most of us never think about it. The tragic thing is…we really don’t care! And guess what…outsiders know we don’t care. They can feel our looks and religious walls protecting US from THEM.
This book has really challenged me to think about how i treat others and how our church treats others. We must remember that we are here for others. we are called to be Jesus. we are called to follow Him…and in following Him, that means we should treat others the way He would treat them. And as far as i am concerned, i think most churches…including mine…don’t do too great of a job being Jesus to a hurting, questioning, seeking, and even atheistic world!
So, get the book. Read it. And then start doing what God has called us to do.
peace. out.
